Where did I get this?

May 10, 2011

Found this in an old notebook, seems too good to be mine, certainly stolen:

Greek statues with their bullet holes for eyes
Blinded as Love by surprise
The secrets of the orphan heart disquise,
Lover & Loved.

  1. Darley permalink

This is from the Alexandria Quartet, by Lawrence Durrell, where I am fairly sure it is attributed to a character called . .. . Pursewarden.

    • I remember Darley, the vaguely amiable bespectacled creature who teaches for a living & writes novels, a slight stoop, fair hair, & the shyness that goes with Great Emotions imperfectly kept under control — a fellow Romantic, for sure.
